The Kenya Women’s Softball National Team were recently crowned Champions in the recently concluded East African Baseball and Softball Championship which was held in Mwanza, Tanzania’s Rock City between 7th - 10th December.

The Tournament which pitted the Blazers versus their neighbours Uganda and Tanzania who squared it off in a double round robin contest where each team would face each other twice. Kenya recorded two impressive wins versus Tanzania which had a similar 15-0 score line (run ahead rule) and lost to Uganda 14-3 in their first tie.

Their rivals Uganda on the other hand also recorded two 15-0 wins versus the hosts and having defeated Kenya in the first tie, they were to play the final match in which a win would’ve seen them being declared the winners. However, this was not to be as their technical bench advised the players to pull out from the event under unclear circumstances; seemingly in protest against the Organizers as there was no bad blood between the participating teams. This move saw Kenya being declared the Champions of East Africa thanks to the levelheadedness and rationality of the technical bench.

Uganda’s unexpected decision cast a pall over what was a wonderful Softball event, however, this would not prove to be a distraction to the Kenyan Team who’s hard work and sacrifice in the buildup to this event was exemplary despite the many challenges that the Softball Federation of Kenya faced in making it possible for this to happen; mostly financial.

The Player of the tournament award went to Kenya’s Catherine Cherogony who also plays for NYS Softball Club.

The Blazers will now break for the Christmas festivities before resuming to what will be an intense and action packed Month of January when the Qualifiers for the 2018 Women’s Softball World Championship will be held in Pretoria, South Africa.
