MMU Pitcher: Elizabeth Wairimu in action in their match versus DeKUT.

The preparations for the DEKUT Series were commendably done by the Hosts on Friday evening as they awaited the arrival of the Softball teams for the Weekend’s games. The early birds to the event were JKUAT and the National League debutants Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) who arrived on Friday evening. The rest of the teams arrived on Saturday morning while Egerton University did not make it to the games.

Seven teams were randomly pooled where pool A had TUM, JKUAT, NYS, and ANU while pool B had MMU, KU and DEKUT. Separate round robin games for the two groups were played in parallel.

The matches kicked off early as JKUAT men played against TUM in the opening match which ended 18 runs to 2 in favour of JKUAT. The closing match for Saturday was between DEKUT men and MMU men which ended 10-0 with the hosts capitalizing on their home advantage to clinch their first victory of the league.

Highlights of the day were made by Caleb Malel who hit two home runs in one game while ANU suffered from a major setback when their Captain Brian Mokoro sustained a severe leg injury in their Match against TUM. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Sunday morning was chilly and the games had to wait for the fields to be remarked due to morning dew on the grass. But this didn’t stop teams from warming up in the large sports grounds within the campus.

As soon as the fields were ready for play the pool games resumed and the semifinals were played between the teams that had made it past the groups. ANU men and DEKUT men bowed out of the cup race in the Men’s semifinals while NYS and KU ladies did not make it past the ladies semifinals. In the Men’s finals, JKUAT team faced off with KU whereas MMU battled it out with JKUAT in the ladies’ finals.

The JKUAT Men’s team clinched the DeKUT Series title after defeating KU 9-1 in a thrilling encounter. The ladies final between MMU and JKUAT was halted due to darkness and will be resumed at a later date to determine the winner.

The series was a great success and we hope that this sets the tone for the rest of the National league Softball season. The teams departed at their own will after the completion of their matches.
